September 7, 1998 GTE Virginia Beach Amphitheater – Virginia Beach, VA

Show Notes

A near full moon tonight and an outdoor venue. Before ‘Given to Fly,’ Ed tells the crowd to check it out and he notes, “It’s nice to be here … beautiful moon … nice and hot … a really good night for singing.” There isn’t a ‘Daughter’ tag–Ed sings “shades go down … the moon is round … shades go down.” ‘Rats’ is a BIG surprise, introduced as the first time played with Matt C., [we haven’t heard this since Buffalo ’96] off the second album, doesn’t get played much and “if I screw up the words, fuck you … at least we’re giving it a try.” The improv leading to ‘MFC’ is much like the improv leading to ‘Habit’ at many of the Australian shows earlier this year. Later Ed says, “Is there a difference between a dreamer and someone who wishes for something? I think there is. I still haven’t figured out which I am,” leading to ‘Wishlist.’ Ed chokes on some of the ‘Leatherman’ lyrics so he sings “la, la” for a whole verse and makes fun of himself. During ‘RVM,’ the band is silouetted and different colors are cycled through on the backdrop, making a nice effect. Mike absolutely rules ‘Black’ every night. The stage is very wide at Virginia Beach and he runs all over it. Ed makes a crack about how they just found out there’s a curfew but they’ll play right up to it and then says that they also just learned that Stone’s zipper was down during the first set but “no one got hurt.” ‘Porch’ is outstanding with a shirtless Mike playing the flying V, fast breakdown with the tribal drums and Ed has the hand mirror out again. Other highlights: rocking ‘Alive’ and ‘Sonic Reducer;’ long ‘Save it for Later’ tag. Band was great; crowd was drunk.

show notes:

to start off the verbal proceedings, “No Way” is far and away my favorite “Yield” track…it’s like the best parts of Graffiti-era Zepp mashed with some jangle and pizzazz. and when they go into that riff after the first chorus…. #chillseverytime

throw in how rarely it’s been played, and how this recording even came to be….

this show was an afterthought; Knoxville was to be my last.

but I wanted more. (people who know me how that’s rarely the case…BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA #Dennis #dandrew)

so a changed plane ticket, and an extra-couple-days car rental and a few tanks of gas delivered me to the parking lot of the GTE Amphitheater as the last strains of Sonic Youth were belching out of the bowl.

and I had no ticket (again, this show was an afterthought)

and NO WAY (GET IT?) did a lawn tape, for the FINAL PJ show of the year for this camper sound acceptable.

so minutes pass, and like an angel from above, someone walked up to me with one in roughly the 40th row (it’s been awhile) for $40…and I ran in, and got the gear ‘situated’ right as the crowd was going nuts….

then “Animal” as an opener? are you shitting me?

that opening 5-song salvo was like a 10-ton heavy thing to the bridge of the nose.

and then RATS???

and then a nifty lil’ improv?

and then, totally out of left yield, I mean *field*, the ONE song that was on the wishlist (ok, this is getting bad)

and a 1-2 knockout punch of “Sonic Reducer” and “Porch” to close it out???

if not for “Leatherman” (a most atrocious song), and a verbal altercation with an unfettered drunken dipshit (fortunately during “Jeremy”, you’ll hear my lack of appreciation, and I try oh-so-hard to not talk during the music….only during the encore break if necessary) and the slightly-cut start it might be my fave of the *tour*

all that said, the final little memory of “Pearl Jam 1998” wrapping up for the Athabascan Alaskan Assassin, was the drive out of Virginny Beach to Iowa for the Crowes ***the next night*** (yes, I am nuts/not well), was it was nighttime, and a pitch black night with vivid pink and blue lightning about an hour into the drive…nothing like we get in Alaska (and I’ve only seen it like this in August in Arizona {monsoon season})

the real memory though was the ONLY radio station that could be picked up was a college radio station, out of Baltimore, doing a 2 hour true-death-metal marathon (they must have played Deicide 3 times)

it made for a fitting soundtrack for leaving the east coast…. #HeadWestOldMan

all that said, you know the drill….

THANKS Dennis!!!

THANKS dandrew!!!

FUCK OFF Hagar!

—Dr. Deep is breeding rats…BIG FUCKING rats…with balls THIS big and dicks THIS long!!! #DirtyLittleJohnnyPunchline #NoWay
