1995PJ Shows

November 4, 1995 Spartan Stadium – San Jose, CA

Show Notes

Ed opens the show early with the (then) unreleased ‘Dead Man.’ Later he quips, “So these are the faces I would have seen if I could have lifted my head up in San Francisco.” After a long departure from these sort of antics, Ed climbs the speaker stacks and scaffolding during ‘Porch.’ He includes a bit of the ‘Three Little Birds’ tag in Porch, repeating the “every little thing’s gonna be alright” line a few times. Ben Harper and Kim Warnick (from the Fastbacks) join PJ in ‘Rock ‘n Roll Star.’

For years, I worked in a record store and we sold used CDs. It was part of a big national chain, which really limited what we could take from customers, and one guy tried to sell me this Pearl Jam radio promo. We couldn’t take it and, as often happened, the customer just left it at the store. I recently found it again after going through some stuff and decided to put it up here. I don’t know why the promo/recording exist exactly – if the station recorded it from the live broadcast, or if it was recorded by the station for a later broadcast, or something else. But the recording is very nice and had pretty nice packaging, with a full artwork digipak and art on the discs. The tracklisting on the back was pretty bad, though, with some blank spots for the then-unreleased songs, some songs given incorrect titles, and disc 2 listing 15 tracks but having only 12 (as you can see below, there are three tracks with 2 songs each in the second half of the show). These are the liner notes:

“All Praise to Pearl Jam. Ticket sales of 34,818 make their November 4, 1995 concert the biggest event in the 62-year history of Spartan Stadium. Long live vitalogy!

Above all, we are obliged to the lsiteners of KOME for showing alternative rock that there is, in fact, a way to San Jose – and to the campus of San Jose State.

Many thanks,

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Ed opens the show early with the (then) unreleased ‘Dead Man’. A little background on the live version: we have the Fastbacks to thank for this. Apparently Kim was backstage about to go on and was very nervous. Eddie asked her what was wrong and she told him she was nervous to walk out there to chants of “ed-DIE, ed-DIE”. So, ed-DIE said, “I’ll take care of that,” grabbed a guitar, and walked out onstage. Many attendees didn’t even recognize him at first. Later in their set, Ed quips, “So these are the faces I would have seen if I could have lifted my head up in San Francisco.” After a long departure from these sort of antics, Ed climbs the speaker stacks and scaffolding during ‘Porch.’ He includes a bit of the ‘Three Little Birds’ tag in Porch, repeating the “every little thing’s gonna be alright” line a few times. Ben Harper and Kim Warnick, from the Fastbacks, join PJ in ‘Rock ‘n Roll Star.’
