After ‘Hail Hail,’ Ed mentions “We have a new record … it came out yesterday,” prompting shouts of “Tuesday” from the crowd. “Oh, it doesn’t come out till Tuesday. Let’s just play it then.” Before ‘Even Flow,’ Ed says “Let’s test out this spring loaded floor.” He changes the ‘Not For You’ lyric to “small my table, fits just one.” Ed throws a bottle of water into the crowd and then gives a teasing “take a bottle drink it down, pass it around.” Mike rotates between a heavily worn tobacco sunburst Fender Strat, a 57 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, a Flying V with glow-in-the-dark stickers all over it, a silver-sparkle Gretsch Les Paul-style guitar, a white Fender Tele, and and red hollowbody (another Gretsch?). Ed plays one of the new Fender Telecoustics (same as for ‘Grievance’ on Letterman) for the most part, switching to a white telecaster on a couple tunes … and, of course, the ukulele (“it’s pronounced ookelele” -Eddie) which he faked a guitar smash on before leaving the stage. All members of R.E.M. were in attendance since they were recording in Vancouver, hence ‘The Wrong Child’ tag on ‘Daughter.’ About 50 fans waiting around outside were let in, for free, approximately 1/4 of the way into the show.
