Show Notes

An awful pit and not the best crowd either, going wild with ‘Corduroy’ as the unusual opener, and breaking the barrier during ‘Red Mosquito.’ Ed asks the crowd to step back and references the (ineffective) “Mariah Carey barricade.” ‘Wishlist’ includes modified lyrics: “I wish I was a 40-foot wave, breaking off the north shore.” Ed smashes down his microphone and stand at one point, seemingly annoyed that he was flubbing lyrics. After the band huddles around Jack, Ed comments that he “… just wanted tonight to be perfect …”, applauds the crowd and they launch into ‘Do the Evolution.’ Mike is awesome, giving a fantastic solo during ‘Even Flow’ and bringing out the flying-V Gibson during ‘Evolution’ and ‘Last Exit.’ ‘In Hiding’ is wonderful live (wow!) and the brief lead-in (new song, improv or whatever?) features a rocking tune. (Partial lyrics: “Came here with no bags, don’t need nothing, don’t need no clothes, I don’t need sunblock on my nose.”) A SUPER encore, with ‘Once’ as an always pleasing surprise, followed by instrument switching (and Jeff’s nice solo) during ‘Smile.’ A 10pm curfew resulted in a too soon end to the show.

show notes:

well, after PJ melted thy face opening for the Stones in November, and hearing they were playing Hawaii for 2 shows, it was kind of a no-brainer to hop on the Hawaiian Airlines flight in Anchorage in FEBRUARY to go to Hawaii for 10 days with the gf at the time to catch the opening dates of the “Yield” tour.

a nice little lawn area nestled into the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului HI, for 2 days it was transformed into “grunge central” (Mudhoney opened, got one complete and one partial recording of them), with fans literally from all over the world converging on the islands to watch PJ whip up their onstage alchemy.

I remember horrible wind, and while this recording *is* a bit washy (or, not up to my usual standards), it’s still solid, and missing most of the ‘whoosh’ that I remember. Dennis said he didn’t do any de-wind treatment; perhaps I’m thinking of night2 only (yes, it’s coming….)

all the other memories from these 10 days involve all of the horrible-yet-healthy things I did to the gf (like bang her on a black-sand beach…BIG no-no, it ‘angers the gods’)

might as well have the gods saying “Fuck Hagar” too, no??? 😉

mahalo!
